DANCE & TECHNOLOGY

“The terms dance technology and Dance and Technology refers to application of modern information technology in activities related to dance: in dance education, choreography, performance, and research.[3] “   (Wikipedia)

SIGNAL OF CHANGE

Technology keeps on being integrated more and more into dance performance in different ways. It makes the movements and choreography extend beyond the dancers bodies.

Technology on stage - 3D projection mapping

One example of how to integrate Technology on stage in a dance performance is "Pixel" from (2014)  Adrien M / Claire B, a dance company specializing in physical-digital performance.

“By projecting light onto the stage and backdrop behind it, the company creates dynamic virtual worlds that respond to and interact with the people among them. In this latest spectacle, dancers spin inside virtual rings; they hold umbrellas that shield them from pixelated rainfall. At its best, the distinction between the physical and digital evaporates entirely.”

Dance and Technology education

More universities than ever around the world, from what I can see, have either programs or courses relating to this specific subject. The courses involve:  screen dance, audiovisuals, sound design, choreography for camera and non-linear editing techniques and the application of video and computer technology to dance. All with the aim of being able to explore and get the ability to create new ways of working with technology and dance within creative choreographic work at a professional level.

REFLECTION & POTENTIAL:

It's going to be fascinating to see what lies ahead of us , when it comes to the combination of new perspectives on choreography, such as expanded choreography, in blend with the endless advancing technology. Choreographers and dance performers are getting more opportunities to work internationally and being independent in producing and making impressive productions at a low cost. All this thanks to technological advances and also the possibility to study the field at the university. All though, with these possibilities we have today, in contemporary times, it also might require an even bigger broader skill set from the artist. You don't only have to choreograph and perform movements, you also need to know how to deal with the technology and integrate it in your creative work.
